It’s hard to communicate the scope of this adventure other than to simply recommend it.
The art style is what ties the whole thing together: a sad, beautiful and overwhelming fallen kingdom explored by our diminutive insectoid protagonist.
But Hollow Knight is one of the best games I’ve ever played, a tight 2D adventure. Hollow Knight: Another tough one, another one you might want to skip if you’re a new gamer. But it’s a great game, bolstered by the maddening tension of exploration and the satisfaction of the game’s impeccable combat design. It’s a difficult game, even on default difficulty. A combination of tight, satisfying combat and an addictive progression loop make that goal simultaneously manageable, impossible, and endlessly entrancing. The goal is the same every time: make it through every level and beat the boss at the end. It’s a rougelite, which means that it auto-generates new levels based on different templates every time you play. This lends itself better to serious binge sessions.ĭead Cells: This isn’t for everyone, but I’m going to encourage you to try it. Unlike Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley does not run on the real world clock, and you can start a new day whenever you want.

It’s a surprisngly deep world full of secrets, pride, charm, and heart. In the game you take over your grandfather’s decrepit farm in the charming town of Stardew Valley, and you gradually build it up by growing vegetables, befriending villagers, crafting improvements and occasionally fighting monsters in caves. Ultimate: Another local multipalyer favorite, Super Smash Bros.

The strangely engrossing life simulator is an easy place to sink dozens of hours into, and maybe many more than that. At time formless, the game asks you to move onto a deserted island with two friends and then gradually build it up with furniture, a museum, flowers, a couple of shops and a cast of anthropomorphic animals.
There may be no better game for this purpose than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.Īnimal Crossing: New Horizons: You’ve read about the industry’s most surprising hit in years, and now it’s time to play it. The Switch shines as a local multiplayer device, with everyone playing on the same screen. But it’s never been quite as good as this, and you owe it to yourself to get this. You already know what it is, it’s Mario Kart, the same basic format of shell-hurling racing that’s been with us since the SNES. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: For me, this is the game that I’ve wound up putting the most hours into on the Switch.
